Don’t look now, but the men’s basketball team might be onto something. A 13-0 run for the Nittany Lions late in the second half ensured a victory over the visiting #14 Boilermakers by a score of 67-64. It’s the first time this season that the Nittany Lions have beaten a ranked opponent. Here’s a full recap from ESPN.
It should be interesting to see where the men’s team goes from here. Last year it pulled off upsets against Michigan State and Indiana, but failed to bring the same intensity to games against lesser opponents. Their 7-11 conference record, however, was an improvement from the 2-14 from the year before. With four talented sophomores, the future may be looking up for Penn State basketball.
The next few games will tell if Penn State is just getting lucky, or if they are a serious contender in the Big Ten. They head on the road now to play #19 Minnesota next Monday, followed by #12 Michigan State at home next Wednesday. Wins in these two On January 17 the team will travel to take on an unranked but perennially powerful Indiana team, and on January 20 they will host a Michigan team who knocked off Duke earlier this season.
If this team wins the next two games, they might be ranked for the first time since who knows when! Perhaps “Nittany Nation” will begin to take notice…we shall see.
